Pfizer claims that the government has granted Teva interim approval to market the generic version of Viagra under the name sildenafil citrate. This move will definitely jeopardize Pfizer’s global annual revenue which is estimated to be around $1billion.
Pfizer’s scientists patented the ED treatment pill in 2002 after developing it in the late 1990s. Though Viagra sales plummeted last year, previous sales have been successful going by the annual revenue reports of around $1billion and Teva pharmaceuticals seems to split the profits
According to Pfizer, the main patent for Viagra is set to expire in 2019. However, Teva, an Israeli based pharmaceutical company that has specialization in the manufacture and distribution of generic drugs, is accused of basing its new generic drug on a dissimilar Viagra patent that expires in 2012.
Through press releases in 2007, Teva made it clear that temporary approval for the production and marketing of 20mg pills of Sildenafil citrate (the main active component of Viagra) had been granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The drug will be appropriate to athletes since it is aimed at improving exercise ability by treating pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, Teva is yet to publicly declare its intention to develop Generic Viagra though the news release indicates that the generic drug and Revatio which is medication produced by Pfizer have similar mechanisms of action.
